Leadership Conferences

Attention Sophomores!

We have two exciting leadership opportunities to share with you. The first is the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Conference (HOBY). HOBY is a dynamic, interactive educational program designed to prepare our country’s youth to become effective, ethical leaders in their home, school, workplace, and community. Outstanding sophomore students who attend this three-day seminar interact with leaders in business, government, education, media and non-profits; they get a realistic look at our nation, its people, and their role within the world community. To find out more, visit www.hoby.org.

The second and equally engaging opportunity is the MassSTAR Citizenship Conference. This conference is a unique three-day experience offered to one sophomore from every Massachusetts-accredited public, private, charter, and vocational high school. The MassSTAR Citizenship Conference presents three days of intensive programming and hands-on learning to challenge the student delegates, broaden their perspectives, and bring out their inner leadership potential. Through a series of panels, group learning activities, and intensive small group discussions, young people learn that they can be proactive leaders in their own communities. To find out more, visit http://massyouthleadership.org.

How To Apply:

Any sophomore wanting to become part of these incredible opportunities must apply by submitting an essay on the topic of Leadership.  In a one page essay (single or double-spaced), please explain why you would like to be considered as a representative at a leadership conference. Feel free to include what you feel are the most rewarding and challenging aspects of being a leader in your school and community. If you have not had an opportunity to be in a leadership position at this point in your school career, please explain why you would like to be a leader in your school and community.

Please submit your essays to Mrs. Bates by Thursday, November 10th (2 PM). (You may turn in a hard copy in Room 1611 [CTE Wing] or submit it via email/share via Google at: hbates@slrsd.org.) The winners of the essay contest will represent Silver Lake at HOBY and MassSTAR this upcoming spring. For further information, please see Mrs. Bates or Mr. Garofalo in Guidance.
